VPN: Virtual Private Network
The UK's road network is a public resource, that anyone can use - rather like the public Internet.
There are many cars and lorries using the road - like the millions of users on the public Internet.
Now imagine a fleet of lorries owned by a haulage company that regularly visits different company depots. The loads they carry are private. This is like a VPN on the Internet. So long as you have access to the depot and put your parcel on the right lorry it 'should' get to its destination for collection securely.
However, there is no guarantee how long it will take, whether it might ne involved in an acident and never arrive, or be hijacked en-route... just like a VPN on the public Internet, where there is always a security risk.
